India wants to reduce its dependence on petrol with flex fuel. Flex fuel is made by mixing methanol or ethanol in petrol. E20 will be converted to E50 in the future.
E20 is the same type of petrol. It is cheaper than petrol. E20 petrol contains 20% ethanol. The target is to double this quantity by 2025.
Jio-BP is the first company to launch ethanol mix petrol in the country. E20 petrol has also started being available at some petrol pumps of Jio-BP. Today we will discuss flex fuel or E20 fuel.
What is E20 fuel?
The biofuel ethyl alcohol or ethanol (C2H5OH) is made naturally by fermenting sugar. India has launched the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme, which will reduce fossil fuel consumption by blending this biofuel with petrol.
E20 is a mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. The number 20 in E20 indicates the amount of ethanol in the petrol mixture. The amount of ethanol in petrol will be higher.
Price of 1 liter E20 petrol
E20 petrol contains 80% petrol and 20% ethanol. Petrol costs around Rs 96 per liter in Delhi. That means 80% petrol becomes Rs 76.80 as against Rs 96.
This is why ethanol is costlier by Rs 55 per litre. The price of 20% ethanol is Rs 11, i.e. Rs 55. For one liter of E20 petrol, normal petrol is available for Rs 76.80 and ethanol is available for Rs 11, both i.e. This is why one liter E20 petrol costs Rs 87.80. It is Rs 8.20 cheaper than normal petrol.
